Fulani herdsmen invade federal poly

The Rector of the federal polytechnic, Ado
Ekiti, Dr Taiwo Akande has raised the alarm
over alleged invasion and destruction of the
school's farmlands by Fulani herdsmen,
Vanguard reports.

Speaking at a pre-convocation media parley at
the weekend, she said the school had
suffered immeasurable loss both in monetary,
academic and research materials to the
alleged invasion.
Dr Akande urged the federal government to
wade in, adding that the police and prominent
Nigerian like Chief Afe Babalola whose
university is situated directly opposite the
institution had tried to curtail further damage
but no positive result.
"This menace of Fulani cattle rearers has been
most destructive. To many of our
demonstration farms and pilot plantations. It is
most painful to also disclose that some of the
pilot farm projects, academic, research
demonstration farms and recently established
plantations on which we pinned our hope of
future revenue enhancement have been
destroyed one after the other by the Fulani
cattle rearers. They will bring their animals to
the campus environment and eat up every
green thing in sight," she said.
Dr Akande who lamented that the destruction
of the polytechnic's farms and project sites
had been on for over two years now, added
that that another major problem confronting
the institution is the activities of land grabbers
and illegal settlers.
The Rector further hinted that the constant
deteriorating resources emanating from
inadequate funding by the federal government
as well as poor patronage by the private
sector in terms of patenting the technological
breakthroughs of the school as parts of its
current challenges.
Dr Akande begged the federal government to
remove the separation between the
polytechnic and university education as such
